Spotlight event: The New Orleans Bingo! Show

The New Orleans Bingo! Show

OK, we’re still a little bemused by it, but during Carnival season, when anything you do should be cra-a-a-zy, The New Orleans Bingo! Show seems to qualify. Ringmaster (ringleader?) Clint Maedgens oversees the interactive cabaret performance, which combines theater, silent films, original music, comedic skits and a live game of Bingo played with the audience.

The whole thing started a decade ago, when Maedgens stumbled across a stockpile of 500 vintage leather bingo cards in a little resale shop outside the French Quarter. Lo and behold: A rock musical game show was born.

In a Mardi Gras story last year that started with the line “Stay off Bourbon Street,” Josh Noel of the Chicago Tribune dubbed the Bingo! Show “a ludicrous amalgamation of rock and bingo led by showmen with face paint and a Theremin, that Space-Agey instrument of wheezing heaves.” Huh?

The fun starts Friday at 9 p.m. at One-Eyed Jack’s, 615 Toulouse Street. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
