We've got your weekend: Step out of your comfort zone

Thursday, May 5/18507 US Hwy 98 West: This event is a bit of a trek for those of us living in Nola, but it's such a cool event that we had to include it. Hot air balloons. That's right, hot air balloons. This is now the 12th year of the Gulf Coast Hot Air Ballon Festival, and it is running all weekend long. The events are: May 5 - Balloon Glow at Tanger Outlets, Foley from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM; May 6 - Festival Grounds from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM (open to public); and May 7 - Festival Ground from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM (open to public). There will be tethered ballon rides and photo opportunities galore. To find out more about the event and purchase tickets, you can go here.

Friday, May 6/ Eifel Society (2040 St. Charles Ave): There is nothing better than cheesy music, soft lights, dancing, and...roller skates. Luckily, this Friday they are all coming together because the Big Easy Rollergirls are holding their Solid Gold Dance Off. This is when the dance krewes get together and shake what they got in order to earn Rollergirl victory! The showdown runs from 7:00 PM until 12:00 AM and the tickets are $12. You can get your tickets here.

Saturday, May 7/Gallier House (1132 Royal Street): Any chance you're feeling old timey? Well, good, because there is a class on monogramming this weekend. This is a hands-on class that provides examples of vintage monograms, lettering styles and engraving. These swirls and scripts will not only be on display; students will learn to make new symbols, traditional monograms, and letterforms using these historic pieces as inspiration. There's going to be tracing as well as combining then retracing existing forms (we don't exactly know what that means, but it sounds fantastic!). No to mention some creations of totally original designs, monograms and letterforms. The class costs $35 and runs from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. You can purchase tickets here.

Sunday, May 8/Cabrini Park: It's mother's day, and maybe you have a mom that always wants to go dancing but doesn't have a dance partner. Now is your chance to step out of your normal shoes and into your swivel shoes in order to make mom smile.  What better way to celebrate your mom than getting her out in the (hopefully) beautiful weather to listen to music and dance? The Vieux Carre Property Owners Association will once again host the Mothers’ Day Concert in Cabrini Park from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with music by the New Leviathan Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra. Bring your chairs, picnics, dancing shoes, and of course, your mom! Even better, it's all free.
