Friday / Shane's shout out: NOLA Brewing Tap Room Grand Opening (3001 Tchoupitoulas), 5:00 p.m.
Every big party at NOLA Brewing features some excellent musical entertainment, and this Friday's big unveiling of their new Tap Room is no exception. Colin Lake, Billy Iuso, Cliff Hines, Nick and the Ovorols and Ed Williams will all be on hand to christen the two-story mecca of local beer that has been in the works for over a year. Great music + delicious brews = the perfect summer night in New Orleans.
Friday / Opera in the Piazza : The American Italian Cultural Center will bring together singers from the New Orleans Opera Association and members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra for an evening of operatic music under the stars in the Piazza d’Italia in the CBD on Lafayette Street from 7 - 10 p.m. Italian food will be available for purchase from St. Clair Wood Fired Pizza and La Divina Gelato, as well as wine and beer. General admission (guests must provide their own chairs) is $10 in advance/ $15 at the door / children under 10 free; VIP tickets (inclusive of reserved seating and 2 drink tickets) $50 each.
Friday / Concerts in the Courtyard: As part of The Historic New Orleans Collection’s (533 Royal) Concerts in the Courtyard series, New Orleans-based jazz ensemble Aurora Nealand and the Royal Roses will perform in THNOC’s outdoor space from 6 - 8 p.m. (doors open at 5:30). Current exhibition “From Winnfield to Washington: The Life and Career of Huey P. Long” will also be open for extend hours during the concert. Admission is $10 (inclusive of three drinks -- beer or wine)/ free for THNOC members.
Friday - Sunday / Nothing but NET: The NET Charter High School hosts its annual fundraiser that supports the school's mentoring program and student networking opportunities with three days of basketball events -- from an evening soiree Friday at the new Jazz Market to three-on-three adult basketball Saturday, a slam dunk contest to a resource fair. Sunday / Chicken-raising workshop : As part of the Eat Local Challenge programming, there will be a chicken-raising workshop. Licensed horticulturalist and chicken keeper Margie Green will give participants tips on raising chickens and teach them how to build a coop. The event, which will be held at the Press Street Gardens at NOCCA (#7 Press Street from 11 a.m. - noon) will also include a chick raffle and a chicken barn raising. The workshop is free and open to the public.
Sunday / Cajun dance and brunch : From 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. folks are invited to join a traditional Cajun dance and brunch in the Bywater at The Tigermen Den (3113 Royal Street). The brunch will feature hot and cold drinks from Solo Espresso, food from Chef Anne Churchill (chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, quiche, jambalaya, grits and gravy and bagels with crawfish or smoked catfish cream cheese), live music by zydeco band TCanaille and dance lessons. $10 suggested donation at the door; food and drink purchased separately.
