We've got your weekend: One day at a time

Thursday, April 28/St. Mary Majaks (918 St. Mary Street): Films can transport viewers to a different time and place, and St. Mary Majaks is doing some major transplanting this week and weekend. They are running four films this week (starting Tuesday, April 26), and we've picked Thursday's film as the must see. Why? Well, the film Evaporating Borders, is an essay in five parts. It offers a series of vignettes dissecting the experience of asylum seekers in Cyprus : A PLO activist and exile from Iraq is denied asylum within 15 minutes; neo-nazi fundamentalists roam the streets in an attack on Muslim migrants; activists and academics organize an antifascist rally and clash with the neo-nazis; 195 migrants drown in the Mediterranean. The plot left us intrigued and curious, so if you want to join another world for 73 minutes then head to St. Mary Majaks. Show begins at 7:30 PM.

Friday, April 29/Prytania Theater (5339 Prytania): There have been Prince symbols flying over Jazz Fest, a giant secondline in Prince's honor, and the Prytania Theater is showing their love for the recently passed artist with the screening of Purple Rain on Friday night. They are working in conjunction with DJ Soul Sister, which means there will be definite tunes to get down to starting Friday night. The screenings will be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 10:00 PM. You can find out details and purchase tickets here.

Saturday, April 30/Carmo (527 Julia Street): The days of college might have offered beer. The days of childhood might have offered ping pong. The days of New Orleans offer both. On Saturday, you can go drink, play, and listen to the sweet sounds of ping pong balls being slammed. It's a get together for ping pong, and it's running from 6:00 PM-10:00 PM. It costs $10, and the equipment is all provided. For more details, check out the event here.

Sunday, May 1/ Hi-Ho Lounge (2239 St. Claude): Whether or not you're able to go see Neil Young at Jazz Fest on Sunday night, there is a place to turn your tears (of either complete love or complete FOMO) into hoots and hollers. It's the OO AzzFest, and it is just what it sounds like. Not only is this the AzzFest, but it's the 3rd annual AzzFest. There will be live booty painting and music with posterior performances like you've never seen. Things start bouncing around 9:00 PM, so if you're in the mood to bounce, check out the details here.
