We've got your weekend: Lots of love to the ladies

Wednesday, February 1/LGBT Community Center (727 South Broad St, Suite 102): The LGBT Community Center is celebrating their new building, their new programs and initiatives, and a new US. They are opening this celebration up to the public and would love for people to join the festivities. Their grand re-opening kicks off Wednesday, February 1 at 10:00 a.m. with a ribbon cutting with Latoya Cantrell followed by a Champagne Reception at 7:00 p.m. The champagne party will feature music, snacks, and loads of people. All are welcome, and this event is free for the public.

Wednesday, February 1/The Internet: We all love our local musicians in New Orleans, and this love spreads far and wide. For this Wednesday, it is Italy and New Orleans that are coming together through the series, Shotgun Boogie. This is an original documentary series about an outsider’s exploration into the social, cultural and musical landscape of contemporary New Orleans. At the helm of the documentary is Michele Boreggi, a sound engineer from Italy living in New Orleans on a six month travel visa. Enlisting the help of filmmaker friends, also newcomers to the city, Michele meets with local musicians in their homes for intimate acoustic performances and frank discussions about New Orleans and how the city has changed over the past decade. The live stream will be at 8:45 p.m. and to stay up-to-date with Shotgun Boogie visit www.shotgunboogie.com and track the project on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.

Thursday, February 2/Art Klub (1941 Arts Street): It is time for the ladies to get together and talk film together. Art Klub is hosting an open screen editions experiment called "Femme Film." They're inviting female filmmakers only to screen and chat about their work, with an all female audience. Open Screen is an 'open-mic night' for filmmakers to share new, old, or works-in-progress. Any film, any genre. First come, first screened. There is a 10min maximum, and 1 film per filmmaker limit. These can be DVDs, Quicktime, or MP4s. The screening and talks begin at 7:00 p.m., and for more information on the event, you can check it out here.

Friday, February 3-5/Hotel Monteleone (214 Royal Street): To celebrate the release of the publication, Guidebooks to Sin: The Blue Books of Storyville, New Orleans, on Feb. 3, 2017, THNOC will host a lecture with Arceneaux at the Hotel Monteleone at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, followed by a reception and book signing at THNOC’s Royal Street campus, 533 Royal Street from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Both events are free, but due to limited seating, registration is required. This will also be the first opportunity to purchase the book, which retails for $50. If you are looking for even more Storyville, you are in luck. A series of lectures/symposiums will be happening all weekend. “Storyville and Jazz, 1917: An End and a Beginning,” The Twenty-Second Annual Williams Research Center Symposium, will take place on February 4 at Hotel Monteleone, and “Storyville: Madams and Music,” an exhibition, will open on Wednesday, April 5 at THNOC’s Williams Research Center (410 Chartres Street).

Saturday, February 5/The George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 North Rampart Street):  It is time for the students and teachers to come together, and in New Orleans, that means music. The George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center is officially launching their 2017 Music Video Production Project. This will be a one-hour info session, free and open to the public, where you can learn all about the class, what they've done in the past and what they will be producing this year. Thanks to the Jazz & Heritage Foundation, this is the third year in a row they are able to offer free music videos to a variety of local musicians, as they pair talented filmmakers and eager students in the A-Z process of making a top quality creative product. The "class" runs from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m., and if you want to participate you will need to reserve your spot here. For more information about the event, make sure to check them out here.
