We've got your weekend: It's all about the stage

Wednesday, July 5/The Catahoula Hotel (914 Union Street): It's not often that you see a movie title that doesn't bring you back into memories or triggers a friend's review of the film, but the film I'm a Cheerleader is doing just that. We aren't sure what the film is about, except that there is a rather consternated female on the front cover with pom pons in her hand, and there is no write-up on the event page for the screening. In other words, it sounds awesome-- a surprise that is long overdue. Hopefully, among the sad cheering there will be flip flops and really tight arm movements, and you can see it all at 8:00 PM. For tickets and information about drink specials, check out their event page here.

Thursday, July 6/Orpheum Theater (129 Roosevelt Way): Orpheum is back with its free screenings, and this week they are showing the Disney sensation Moana. Moving tattoos, a girl embracing on her destiny, random signing and dancing, and a super dumb chicken that somehow doesn't end up dying, it's all there. These shows are free and open to the public, and Moana will begin at  2:00 PM. For more information on this screening as well as all their summer screenings, check out their event page here.

Friday, July 7/Poor Boys Bar (1328 St. Bernard Ave): WHIV FM is inviting you to throw down and pass a good time for a good cause. They are hosting a free dance party featuring some of WHIV's Djs spinning toe-tappers and floor bangers for your delight. Casey Jay, Riviera Slim and other DJs will be on the 1 and 2s so you can break a sweat in the AC'd hideaway of Poor Boys. There are also $5 drink specials and plenty of love to go around. As they say, get high energy for low-power radio. The dance party begins at 10:00 PM and goes until 2:30 AM. For more information, you can check out their event page here.

Sunday, July 9/Ashé Cultural Center (1712 Oretha Castle Haley): We can all thank Essence Fest for a lot of things--music, new people in the city, and taking over so really cool events get postponed and we can go the next weekend. Specifically, Team SNO (Slam New Orleans) has moved their usual first Sunday of the month slam to this coming Sunday on July 9. You can go hear the members of Team SNO slip through their words and weave together their messages. The readings begin at 7:00 PM and this goes until 9:30 PM. For more information, you can check out their event page here.
