We've got your weekend: Brunch, boozy comedy and 'Breaking Wind'
Wednesday / Irvin Mayfield’s Purple Masquerade : Irvin Mayfield’s Playhouse (at the Royal Sonesta, 300 Bourbon) hosts a special NYE concert and burlesque show (from 10 p.m. - 1 a.m.; doors open at 9 p.m.), featuring music from local funk band Purple Disrespsect -- with Irvin Mayfield on Hammond organ, Ronald Markham on bass, Jamal Batiste on drums, June Yamagishi on guitar. The event will also feature savory and sweet bites, open bar and a champagne toast at midnight. Tickets (call (504) 553-2299 or email [email protected]) are $125 general admission / $175 VIP.

Friday / Storywalk: In partnership with St. Tammany Parish Library, the Northlake Nature Center (23135 U.S. 190, Mandeville) will host a family-friendly walk and story event that will lead visitors through the center grounds as they read an accompanying interactive story. The event, which is both stroller and wheelchair-friendly, is free and open to the public. No reservations necessary.
Friday / 50 First Jokes : The new year is about, well, beginnings. And, more often then not, booze. In that same vain, local comedy theater The New Movement (2706 St. Claude) presents their annual BYOB presentation of 50 First Jokes, a gathering of 50 comics from New York, NOLA, and Austin present their first jokes of the year.
The show, which will be hosted by comedians Addy Najera and Cyrus Cooper, begins at 10:30 p.m. $7 online / $10 at the door.
Friday - Sunday / Gone with the Breaking Wind : Mid City Theatre (3450 Toulouse) presents original production Gone with the Breaking Wind, which, as its name suggests is a parody of cinematic classic Gone with the Wind. The performance will star actress Varla Jean Merman-- who also appears in Mid City Theatre’s Golden Girls series -- as the parodic counterpart of Scarlet Ohara. Tickets are $30. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 6 p.m. Sunday. Seating begins 30 minutes prior to the show. Gone with the Breaking Wind will also show the weekends of the 9 and 16.
Saturday / The drunken telling of drunken tales : The New Movement is apparently not the only group celebrating the New Year with cocktails and stories and stories and cocktails.
Local storytelling series Close Me Out hosts a group of local storytellers -- including Annie Barry, Leon Blanda, Amber Carew and April Siese -- all of whom will present a slew of their best drinking-related stories… naturally with drinks in-hand. The event will take place at Hi Ho Lounge (2239 St Claude); $5 cover at the door. Stories begin at 8 p.m.
Sunday / Crevasse 22 brunch : As part of Prospect 3+ installation Crevasse 22, which features a sculptural exhibition set alongside a crevasse, or massive breach, in the Mississippi River levee that flooded much of St. Bernard Parish during the historic flood of 1927, CANO hosts a complimentary country brunch hosted at the exhibition site from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Free Trolley buses are available to transport visitors from the CAC to the site (8122 Saro Lane, Poydras, Louisiana) at 10:30 a.m.
