Thursday / It’s all just a little bit of history repeating : Commemorate the 199th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans (Wait, which one was that?), the first battle in the War of 1812, (we won this battle, by the way) in period appropriate style, at a special dinner hosted by the Hotel Mazarin, in the Quarter.

The evening begins with cocktails in the courtyard (cash bar) and then continues with a five course wine dinner, featuring dishes such as oyster veloute, topped with cream and caviar and slow roasted pork loin confit with bacon pearl onions. Andrew Jackson and General Pakenham are rumored to be making guest appearances. Tickets are $129 (inclusive of tax and gratuity) per person. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30; dinner is from 7:30 – 9:30.

Friday / It’s beginning to look a lot like Mardi Gras : With Christmas and New Year’s behind us, NOLA has officially entered the Mardi months. This weekend, the Louisiana State Museum: Presbytere will debut a new Krewe of Hermes exhibit which will be added to the It’s Carnival Time display. The exhibit, which concentrates on the evolution Mardi Gras experienced during the 20th century, will showcase original costumes, float and ball sketches, party favors, and film footage from early balls and parades. Before the grand opening, hosted by Friends of the Cabildo, LSM Historian Karen Leetham will lead a panel discussion, featuring a Carnival float designer, curator, and  Hermes Krewe members.

The discussion begins at 6:30 PM at the Louisiana Sttae Museum: Presbytere; the grand opening is from 7 – 9 PM. The event is free for FOCmembers and $20 for non-members. The exhibit runs through March 4 and, after its premiere, can be accessed with normal museum admission.

Friday /  MARTi for a cause : Local dance troop the Camel Toe Lady Steppers hosts their annual fundraiser for the Roots of Music. The Mardi Gras themed event will be held at the Frenchmen Art Market and will include Carnival games, aerial bartenders, a costume contest, raffles, a silent auction, food trucks and entertainment by the Camel Toe Lady Steppers and DJ Rusty Lazy. Tickets are $15.

Saturday / Laugh a little : Comedians Chris and Tami are kicking off the New Year with a New Year’s variety show. The hilarious duo will host a brand new set at the New Movement Theater, with sketches from Horse Cops, Mike Breeze, Kate Mason, and more. Tickets are $5 at the door. Guests are welcome to BYOB.

Sunday /  : Newly formed Shotgun Cinema, a non-profit film organization featuring monthly series of new and repertory cinema, will present their inaugural film at the Marigny Opera House at 7 PM. They will be screening Wong Karwai’s In the Mood for Love (2000), a romantic drama, set in 1962 Hong Kong — winner of Cannes Technical Grand Prize. Tickets are $7 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 PM.
