We got your weekend: Disco, DJs, dogs, and drinks

Friday / Happier hour : The Greater New Orleans Foundation resumes its six-week summer pop-up happy hour series this week. Until August 15th, on Fridays from 5:30 – 6:30 the GNOF will host a free happy hour, including a signature cocktail, beer, and light bites, each week spotlighting a different non-prfot and set at a new location. The Alliance Francaise invites all dogs to be French at the French Dog contest on Saturday.

Saturday / Rouge Rover, Rouge Rover : As part of their Bastille Day Celebration, the Alliance Francaise will host a French Dog Contest. The pups need not be a French breed to participate, they just need to play — or rather, dress — the part in French-inspired costumes. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Most French, Best Dressed, and Most Jules Verne. Registration is $5 (all proceeds will benefit the LASPCA) and will remain open until 15 minutes prior to the contest, which will occur at 4:30 PM at the Spanish Plaza. Saturday / Disco reincarnated : Love it or hate it, disco is back, well, at least for a night. On the 35th anniversary of Disco Demolition night, when Chicago DJ Steve Dahl and fellow disco pundits blew up disco records at Comiskey Park during a White Sox/ Tigers game, the Zephyrs and Disco Amigos invite baseball and disco fans alike to the field in attempt to break the world record for the largest disco. The event will feature a disco-themed tailgate; disco parade; Zephyrs vs. Redbords game, complete with disco-oriented in-game activities, and, naturally, a disco after party with music from the appropriately named 70s band, LavaLamp.

Online tickets start at $5, or buy them at the field dressed in your finest disco-wear and receive a discount. Tailgating starts at 4:30 in front of the Zephyrs field (6000 Airline Dr., Metairie).

Saturday / Play that funky music : Local arts and humanities website The People Say Project presents their third annual Backyard Cut Session, an outdoor benefit celebrating the continuing evolution of New Orleans culture, rom 6 PM – 12 AM at 4636 South Saratoga Street. . The event will feature funk and R&B music spun by various DJS, including Maxmillion, Rik Ducci, RQ Away, Yamin, Justin Thomas and Brian Boyles; dancing, a raffle, and food and drinks. All proceeds will benefit the NOLA Mix youth DJ program and Freret Neighborhood Center. The event is free and open to the public; a $5 donation is suggested.

Running of the Bulls festivities will conclude on Sunday with Hemingway contests at Maison.

Sunday / Hemingwho? : If you’re not completely running on empty after the weekend’s dogs, disco, DJs, and drinks, head to the Hemingway celebration and contests — the final leg (El Pobre de Mi — “Poor Me Day”) in the four-day Running of the Bulls event set — at Maison at noon. Contestants can compete in the Hemingway talent contest — demonstrating their faculty of Hemingway’s works via creative performance (from dramatic readings to acrobatics, plays staged with stuffed animals to boxing matches with clowns) — and/or the Hemingway look-alike contest; voyeurs are also welcome to attend.
