FRIDAY / Breaking!: Jazz Fest fever keeping you out of the loop? Go to the New Movement Theater Friday night for Press Pass, a night of improv and commentary on current events. At $5 a ticket, it’s cheaper than cable, and probably no more absurd than your standard CNN or Fox News segment. Luckily, this is one instance where the journalism is supposed to be a joke.

SATURDAY  / Storm trooping: Whether you’re coming from Bayou St. John or a galaxy far far away, may the fourth be with you on your drive to Metairie this Saturday for the Star Wars party at the Turtle Bar. There will be a DJ, drinks, and a costume contest, just like on Tatooine, probably. Maybe you’ll find your Han Solo, or Chewie, if he’s more your type.

SATURDAY / Hop shop: Jazz Fest weekends are always full of beer and music, both on the fairgrounds and off. Instead of shelling out $5 for 12 ounces during the day, join Nola Brewery and MusicCares for Rock ‘n’ Hops, a night of music, local beer, and tacos (so basically, heaven). $20 in advance gets you all you can drink craft beer, next-level bar food from Taceaux Loceaux, and music to keep you dancing all night long.

THURSDAY-SUNDAY / Like a puppet on a string: If you’re looking to get inside after the heat of Jazz Fest, go to either the Marigny Opera House or the Mudlark Public Theater for the second weekend of the New Orleans Puppet Festival. With family friendly and late night performances, there are nearly a dozen opportunities to enjoy this underappreciated art form. Read Sharon Litwin’s interview with one of the puppeteers here.
