Thursday / All the world’s a stage : Newly founded performing arts company Compleat Stage presents Sappho’s Aphrodite: Tales of Love and Death, the second installment of their ROOT series, which explores the mutliplicty of storytelling. Each “parlor show” renders stories, classic and new, in numerous forms — from spoken text to dance to photography. The performance starts at 8 PM at the Tigerman Den (3113 Royal St.). The event is free and open to the public; tickets are required, however — available by RSVPing here.

Thursday / Bring me something, mister : Give your Netflix account a chance to recoup and attend Bring Your Own’s first pop-up storytelling presentation of 2014 at Bywater Boxing Club (617 Piety St.). As usual, eight storytellers will entertain for seven minutes each with tales about… drumroll… heroes — from idols to anti-heroes to giant sandwiches. BYO cocktail hour begins at 7:30 (cocktails provided by Bywater Boxing Club will also be available for purchase); Communist Swine Taco Social will also be present to keep attendees fed. Storytelling begins at 8. The event is free and open to the public.
Friday and Sunday / BURLYesque : My what hairy legs that burlesque dancer has. Hi-Ho Lounge (2239 St Claude) presents an unconventional burlesque set with an all-male ensemble performing to metal music. Woo the Clown, Chris Wecklein and Mistress Kali will host the show (9 PM both days). Admission is $15.
Saturday / Beneficial booze and barbecue : Do good by stuffing yourself with BBQ and wine. Simple enough, right? Wines of South Africa, a not-for-profit organization that promotes the exports of South African wine (because you can never have too much wine), is hosting a South African food and wine benefit, BBQ to Braii, for Habitat for Humanity. Guests can taste a variety of South African wines, paired with full South African menu, as DJ Xander Ferreira spins some jams. Tickets are $20 (inclusive of all food and wine), all of which benefits Habitat for Humanity New Orleans.

Sunday / Who let the dogs out? : Cuteness overload alert: Arguably the cutest parade of Carnival, the Mystic Krewe of Barkus, will be rolling (and waging) through the Quarter — from Armstrong Park to Jackson Square, then back to Armstrong — starting at 2 PM, marching to the theme “Dogzilla: Barkus licks the Crescent City.” Registration (one person and one dog) to walk in the parade is $40 through the 19th or day of for $50. As always, there will be various food, beverage, and pet-oriented vendors set up at Armstrong and Jackson Square.
And just because your company for the day is a dog doesn’t mean you have to dine like one. As a nod Barkus festivities, Sobou will open up its patio to canines and their human escorts from noon to 6 PM, with water and treats for the dogs and $3-6 sips and snacks for people.
