Handmade voodoo dolls from Voodoo Authentica

Thursday /  BOOdoo : From 1 - 7 PM, Voodoo Authentica hosts their annual Halloween Voodoofest (the one with herbs, dolls, and gris-gris, not electronic music -- very different voodoo fests) at 612 Rue Dumaine. The event showcases educational and cultural presentations, African drumming lessons, handmade voodoo crafts, book signings, complimentary refreshments, and an ancestral ritual. The event is free and open to the public.

ThursdayTrick-or-beat : Catch the final fall '13 installment Jazz in the Park (Armstrong Park) with a special Halloween show, featuring the sounds of Rebirth and Kermit Ruffins, as well as festive touches, including ‘trick-or-treating’ among vendor stands and a costume contest. Keep the party going after the show by joining the second line to Kermit Ruffin’s Treme Speakeasy (1535 Basin). The show starts at 5 PM and is free and open to the public.

FridayTell me a story : Wally Lamb will discuss and sign his new book, We are Water, from 6 - 7:30 PM at Garden District Book Shop (2727 Prytania). Lamb’s son, Justin, an award-winning slam poet and local resident will serve as the opening act. Books will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public.

 Saturday / Sweet Tang, you make my heart swing : Got a thang for tang? From 11 AM - 1 PM, The Green Project (2831 Marais) offers one of their Green and Grow workshops, this week on all foods fermented -- from sourdough to kimchi; kombucha to sauerkraut. Complimentary coffee and a light brunch will be provided. RSVP via email. The workshop is free for The Green Project members and $5 for non-members.

SaturdayA la cART Octavia Gallery will host their premiere exhibition, "Light on Water," for artist Eliza Thomas, at 6:30 PM. Thomas’ work is inspired by the natural world, functioning as responses to place. The specific exhibition at Octavia will be exclusively concentrated on water. Sunday / Shane’s shout out : If you find yourself still out at 1:30 AM Sunday morning, head over to the Maple Leaf, where piano-drum-guitar trio Marco Benevento, Roosevelt Collier, and Terrence Higgins will bang out, as Shane says, “improvisational party rock.”
