Virtual gallery: Rock with change

Rock with change seemed to be the theme of the New Pornographers/The Pains of Being Pure at Hearts’ show at the Civic Theatre Friday evening. In their own right, each band has been carving out their alternative rock roots for a number of years now — the NP’s since 1999 and Pains since 2007.

The short set by the Pains, who hail from New York, was energetic and primarily comprised of material from their latest album, Days of Abandon. The band exhibited the same sort of energy their BUKU set demonstrated earlier this year, the only significant difference being the omission of a keyboardist this time around.

Canada-based New Pornographers are touring with their original band, many of whom are currently working on their own confident solo projects; all together again, the group produced incredible music. The ensemble filled out the Civic stage, playing in front of a large banner for their latest album release and the focus of their current tour, album Brill Bruisers. As expected the set consisted mainly of music from this new album; however, the band still played songs that represented the rest of their catalogue. In true rock star fashion, the band performed not one, but two, encores. View an extended gallery here.
