Virtual gallery: New Politics, Bad Suns and SomeKindaWonderful

It always feels a bit odd to me to show up at a show at 6 p.m., but this is the case when attending an “all-ages” show, even with the majority of the new alt-pop punk audience falling well under 21.

An all-ages show it was last Wednesday evening at the House of Blues featuring SomeKindawonderful, Bad Suns and New Politics. Due to tepid ticket sales, the concert was moved from the main room in The House of Blues to the Parish. The venue change proved fortuitous, producing a highly personal environment and in-your-face performances from all three bands.

The evening began with a set from SomeKindaWondeful, a five-piece band from Cleveland that released their debut self-titled album this past June. The band’s music is best described as a combination of soul and funk, mixed in with some alternative vibes. Having the opening slot, the band chose six songs that, in a short but entertaining set, provided a clear sense of the band’s music.

Following SomeKindaWonderful’s performance, California-based band Bad Suns played, promoting their debut album, “Language & Perspective.” The four-piece indie-alternative rockers produced a blistering set from start to finish and, based on the audience’s reaction, folks didn’t seem to want them to exit the stage.

The show’s main event was a set from alt-pop punk act New Politics, a band that hales from Copenhagen. Considering their extensive touring background, performing with several well-known acts, the three-piece group is seasoned, to say the least, even though they formed in 2009.  The truncated stage limited the band’s movement, but they still managed to make use of every inch of the stage. The audience appeared to enjoy every minute of the energetic set, loudly proclaiming their love for the band. The musicians, in turn, responded with even more energy.
