They will be heard:poetry slam in New Orleans

UNO film student Eric Smithling recently took a look at Slam New Orleans (SNO) and the growing local slam poetry scene in NOLA.

"Working closely with Team SNO, the city's award-winning poetry group, I was deeply moved by their passionate displays of artistic freedom," Eric says. "Everyone should be able to express themselves without fear of judgment or persecution, and spending time with members of New Orleans' poetry scene reaffirmed that belief. I hope this short documentary inspires you to follow your own path, create and explore, and most importantly, be heard."

If you want to experience the slam poetry scene for yourself, the best poets in the city will compete in a slam poetry showdown at 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Shadowbox Theater. It's a big night, when National Slam Poetry Champions Team Slam New Orleans decide their 2014 Slam Poetry Team. Expect a no-holds barred, all-out best-of-the-best from beginning to end, say organizers. The winners will be representing New Orleans in the 2014 National Poetry Slam Championships (which the local team has won in the past).

This film kicks off a series about local culture presented by the UNO Film Department and NolaVie. Stay tuned.
