V-Side: Filthy Linen Festival, daiq attack, ostrich races

Get dirty at evening Frenchmen Art Market

THURSDAY-SATURDAY / Snap crackle pop-up: Originally a Jazz Fest pop-up, the Frenchmen Street Art Market is now weekly! From 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, local artists set up their tables and wares at 619 Frenchmen St. between the Apple Barrel and Spotted Cat. This weekend is particularly unique as the Market is putting on the first Filthy Linen Festival ever. Dig your duds out of the laundry and head over for some shopping and Frenchmen fare Saturday night. Thursday through Sunday weekly, 7PM-1 AM, 619 Frenchmen St., free admission.

SATURDAY / Who daiq? With temperatures and humidity running high, we can’t think of a better time to celebrate one of the many quintessential New Orleans drinks: the frozen daiquiri. The Second New Orleans Daiquiri Festival is this Saturday, Aug. 18, at 4000 St. Claude Ave. Presented by OHNO Co. and the Bywater Community Development Corporation and sponsored by Sailor Jerry Rum, the festival promises to be more than just a bad hangover; it features gourmet daiquiris designed by some of New Orleans’ most infamous bartenders, fancy food trucks, six of the best local DJs, and a photo booth to document your brain freeze. Saturday, Aug. 18, 3-9 PM, 4000 St. Claude Ave., free admission.

Seriously? Ostrich racing? At the Fairgrounds?

SATURDAY / Drink like a camel:  Abita Beer presents the first Tails and Ales, and no, “tails” is not a typo. Tails refers to the featured horse, camel, and ostrich racing. If that’s not enough to entice you, the ale portion refers to the tasting of more than 75 craft beers from around the world. With unusual racing and specialty beers as well as a VIP option that gets you food, early admission, and prime seating, get tickets as soon as possible because they are bound to run out. Saturday, Aug. 18, 5-9 PM, 1751 Gentilly Blvd., tickets $30-60.
