UNO documentary: JuJu and more in Gentilly
It's a restaurant. And barbershop. A theater. Bookstore. Performance space and concert hall.
The JuJu Bag Cafe at 5363 Franklin Ave. defies easy definition -- the creative gathering spot in Gentilly offers everything from hair cuts and hot meals to jazz and conversation. The JuJu Bag pulls people as much for its cultural offerings as its Friday fish fry or Sunday jazz brunch.
Next up is the final session of the Summer Reading Series by the MelaNated Writers Collective, one of the city's only groups of writers of color. The free reading takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2.
Meanwhile, get acquainted with one of the city's most unique gathering spots (don't miss the deck out back) with this short documentary by UNO film student Stephen Miles, who stopped by earlier this year to interview owners Tommye Myrick and Phyllis Johnson.
