UNO documentary: 'Hollygrove Market'
Part urban farm, part produce market, part community garden -- Gert Town vegetative hub Hollygrove Market works to connect New Orleanians with local farmers and their products. The uniquely modeled market establishes the connection between local consumer and producer in such a way that allows shoppers to put fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies on the table at a moderate price point and farmers to sell their crops for fare wages outside of a traditional farmers market. But Hollygrove is about more than just the produce.
The market's Community Outreach Coordinator Rie Mae emphasizes Hollygrove's interest in community. One chief way Hollygrove has incorporated members of the city into its organization is by offering a volunteer program, which offers folks a hands-on education in the local food system, as well as complimentary local produce in exchange for their work
Cassady Brown, a student in the Department of Film and Theatre at the University of New Orleans, speaks with Ma about Hollygrove, its products and its extent of community involvement.
