UNO documentary: All Talk With Chuck Perkins

If you didn't immediately grab a ticket to either of the Aug. 21 Joan Rivers shows at Cafe Istanbul ... it's too late. Both shows are sold out.

But there are plenty of other reasons to check out the hot new performance spot in The Healing Center run by local spoken-word artist Chuck Perkins. One is Musically Speaking, a new series of music-themed movies and documentaries curated and hosted by DJ Soul Sister, being shown every Monday during the months of August and September. Tonight (Aug. 13) at 7 p.m. it will be "That's the Way of the World," a film about the music business that features an eponymous soundtrack by Earth, Wind and Fire.

If the movie doesn't make your social calendar, then consider Cafe Istanbul's weekly 5 p.m. Friday Happy Hour, where Linda Aubert's piano tunes are augmented by a celebrity guest chef. This week (Aug. 17) Charmaine Neville will be bringing her Gumbo Zaire.

None of the above headliners, however, outshine the poet, Virgo, and innovator who runs the show. In "All Talk With Chuck Perkins," UNO film student Arielle Jackson interviews the engaging and talented man himself. Enjoy.

The Film and Theatre Department of UNO and NolaVie present this series of short films produced by the students in Laszlo Fulop's documentary class. Read Renee Peck's column about the program here.
