The Vie Side: Metal Tchaikovsky, Local Markets, Burying Barbie

FRIDAY / Mistletoe and Metal: Ever looked upon the holiday season and thought that all that’s missing is a little hard rock? The Invincible Czars are coming to fill the void. They play a version of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” as a metal show, complete with dancers, video, and lights. Just tell your girlfriend you’re taking her to see “The Nutcracker.” The ballet has nothing on them.

FRIDAY-SUNDAY / Up and down the boulevard: This weekend, the Ashe Cultural Arts Center is kicking off Christmas with the 13th Annual Holiday on the Boulevard. It is both a holiday market and family festival, featuring local vendors and music, spoken word, and dancing. Come shop local and listen to dozens of local acts play to get you in the Christmas spirit in a truly New Orleans style.

SATURDAY / Burying Barbie: Welcome to New Orleans, where even our running social commentary on the status of women in media gets its very own second line. This Saturday, Barbie is having a jazz funeral to combat the unrealistic portrayal of body image that she has helped perpetuate over the years, to make way for Jesse Freeman’s new exhibit, “Elle Orleans,” a mix of fashion and political statement through art. The second line gets going at 7 PM in Jackson Square and finishes at the reception and exhibit at the L’Entrepot Gallery.
