The Vie Side: Literary events, Movies, Porch crawls

THURSDAY / Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: The New Orleans Bookfair is coming up November 17th. To fundraise, Handsome Willy’s is hosting a literary trivia night. Whether you commonly refer to things as Joycean and your dream home has built-in bookshelves or you secretly do always prefer the movie to the book and don’t have the courage to say it, when there are bar tabs up for grabs, put that pride aside because it’s every team for itself. Come early to hear a reading from the talented UNO MFA students.

The Birds

FRIDAY/ The Birds are coming: Halloween is coming up, and for adults in New Orleans, it generally means drinking too much while wearing a costume (so, like most weekends), and very little being actually scared. Change that this Friday at the Sculpture Garden. NOMA is presenting Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, which is probably one of the scariest movies one could watch outside. Bring a blanket and your favorite person to cuddle up with, and try not to keep your eyes to the skies for a bird attack. Just watch the movie. You’ll be fine, I promise.

FRIDAY / Porch swingin’: Any city can have a pub crawl, but it takes a truly unique one to have a porch crawl. This Friday, the Mid-City Neighborhood Organization is holding their biggest fundraiser of the year, the Mid-City Porch Crawl.  Get a trial run in for your Halloween costume and take a stroll to 5 neighborhood porches and the cemetery, sipping cocktails and sampling local cuisine. It kicks of Friday at 6:30 PM at Mick’s Irish Pub with all profits going towards projects for the betterment of Mid-City.

New Orleans Children’s Book Fest

FRIDAY – SATURDAY / Take a look, it’s in a book: Cheryl Landrieu and Ruby Bridges present the New Orleans Children’s Book Festival this weekend at the Latter Branch Library on St. Charles Ave. Friday night, the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra will perform. All are invited to attend from 6:30-8 PM. Bring a picnic and blankets and watch the sun go down. Saturday from 10 AM-2 PM is the festival itself, which includes free books, face painting, story telling, and readings from the winners of the NolaVie Best Children’s Book Competition. Come for a day of fun and learning.
