The Vie Side: Classic Queen, Saint Parades, Carnival Kick Off

FRIDAY – SATURDAY / No time for losers: This is the show that will make even the most reluctant orchestra-goer into a classical music enthusiast. This weekend (January 4-5) at the Mahalia Jackson Theater, Michael Shotton teams with the Louisiana Philharmonic to bring us the music of Queen. While there’s no comparison to Freddie Mercury (no one will ever be able to rock a mustache and tight pants like he did), the LPO will play the greatest hits of the legendary band.  Just try to keep it together during “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

SATURDAY / Mardi Pardi: This past week, we celebrated the year 2013. This Saturday, Jan. 5, however, the Krewe of Orpheus will be celebrating the 13th night to kick off the carnival season. With an open bar from 8 to midnight, live music, food, and big screens for the play-offs, there’s no reason not to celebrate the season at Generations Hall with the Krewe. Tickets are $60 in advance, $70 at the door.

SATURDAY / Tease to please: Fleur de Tease is back at One Eyed Jacks Saturday,  Jan. 5, showcasing “beauty, brains and boobs.” If those are of any importance to you, and they should be, make your way to Toulouse Street to see burlesque and boy-lesque performers bringing their favorite routines to the stage. There are shows at 8 and 10, with options for general admission and reserved seating.

SUNDAY / Jeanne D’Arc: In order to have a parade thrown for your birthday, you have to be pretty important. This Sunday, Jan. 6, the Krewe de Jeanne D’Arc is throwing the Joan of Arc parade to honor her 601^st birthday. To celebrate the Maid of Orleans, the signature throws are swords, candles, butterflies, and more. There will of course be cake and champagne, carts and banners, Renaissance costumes and horses, for a uniquely New Orleans spin on a more traditional celebration.
