Smoothie At The Movies: June!

The summer started off with a rumble and a roar in May’s front-runner champ of summer: Godzilla. Though June has its own movies that will go up against the Lizard King for money-making dominance (i.e. another Transformers movie by the destroyer of childhood memories Michael Bay), let’s look at what will be some of the actual Best Movies in June.

The Fault in Our Stars (June 6th)

Shailene Woodley is already having a great 2014. Her first young adult fiction brought to the big screen, Divergent, was a monster hit and has put her on the right path for stardom. Now, taking a step out of the action hero world, Woodley shows her full acting skills as a teenager with cancer in Fault in Our Stars. The best-selling book already has the mass hysteria teen following that you can only hope for in young adult lit. Having the mass fandom of a book, you always run the risk of backlash from those same fans. But all the reports seem favorable — so make sure you bring a pocket full of tissues and go with a group of people who you don’t mind crying in front of … because I have no idea how you’re getting out of this one without being a hot mess afterward.

Edge of Tomorrow (June 6th)

Tom Cruise as a soldier not ready to be the hero the world needs. Emily Blunt as the super fox badass who is ready to kick him into shape. The only way Edge of Tomorrow could make me more excited is if there were a crap ton of aliens. Oh wait —  there is!? This sci-fi epic is set in a future where the human race is going to battle with an alien force that is destined to win. Destined, of course, until Tom Cruise gains their power to relive the same day over again. It’s Ground Hogs Day meets Starship Troopers with the Cruise missile in full summer movie craziness. It might be so good you’ll want to relive it everyday, too.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (June 13th)

The surprise animated hit of 2010 has come back to the big screen and doubled down on the dragons in How to Train Your Dragon 2. The first movie was visually impressive, but its real trick was the heartfelt story of the main character Hiccup, the outcast Viking kid who just couldn’t fit in with the dragon-killing culture that engulfed him. Now Hiccup and his dragon Toothless are on a new adventure, one that will lead him to find his long-lost mother and realize that there has always been a reason why he felt so differently then everyone else. The visuals will be as impressive, if not more, than the last. It will be interesting to see if they can bring about as much heart as they did in the last one.

22 Jump Street (June 13th)

21 Jump Street was an action comedy that made fun of the growing trend of making reboot movies. So it goes to reason that the sequel of the surprisingly funny original will take on the idea of the over-the-top second film. The boys are back and this time headed for some higher education. Johan Hill and the “woah, this guy is actually funny” Channing Tatum return to their old buddy cop ways as undercover cops sent to college to break up a drug ring. If Tatum could just spend the rest of his career doing Jump Street and White House Down sequels, my life would be complete.

Indie Quick Hits:

This month’s indie movies are all designed for the funny bone, each a little different in its own crazy loopy way. I’m not sure when they’ll be playing in a theater near you, but all will be available for at-home enjoyment with Video On Demand.

They Came Together (June 27th)

Director David Wain has got the old camp crew back together to make another satire on the genre films. Just as Wet Hot American Summer took the weird world of camp films and turned it on its head, so does They Came Together with the rom-coms. With Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler as leads, it’ll be hard not to love.

Obvious Child (June 6th)

Jenny Slate (an SNL alum) plays a comedian who’s having a rough go with things in Obvious Child. This of course all comes to a head when she finds out she’s pregnant from a one-night stand. Slate is able to find humor in all of the challenging things that come at her, and this movie is able to really work through tough choices and decisions with hilarity.

Ping Pong Summer (June 6th)

Ocean City Maryland, 1985. The Hair. The Clothes. The Music. Susan Sarandon and Ping Pong. What more in the world could you ask for!!

June will be the month when you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, dragons will soar, and Tom Cruise will save the world, and all of us, once again.
