Futurebirds headline raw rock-n-roll in New Orleans

Futurebirds and their temporary tour mates J. Roddy Walston & The Business stop in New Orleans next Tuesday for a big up-and-comers showcase at One Eyed Jack’s. The band’s current tour, kicking off at home in Athens, Ga., at the newly re-opened Georgia Theatre, will continue through Austin City Limits all the way to the Left Coast and back again.

Futurebirds headline at a can’t-miss show at One-Eyed Jack’s on Tuesday.

It has been a breakout year for both bands, each riding a wave of momentum into big weekend festival appearances and adding to the can’t-miss nature of this can’t-miss night on Toulouse Street. The two bands will be joined by New Orleans’ own New Grass Country Club.

Tickets for this humdinger bill can be found in the bargain bin and picked up in advance here for $10; if still available, they’ll be $12 at the door.

FUTUREBIRDS

Live at Bonnaroo 2011

So far, 2011 has been a big year for the Birds, after releasing their debut LP Hampton’s Lullaby in summer 2010. This year they’ve appeared for a number of shows at SXSW, covered Chris Isaak and Stevie Nicks, released a new EP Via Flamina this spring, and run around the country on the Bonnaroo Buzz Tour alongside Grace Potter (and a set at the Roo in June) and Gary Clark Jr.

This fall the band heads out West and arrives back in the South for a pair of opening dates for fellow Athens natives Widespread Panic in Alpharetta and Nashville in October. Luckily, this year’s Hi-Ho Lounge Birds show was captured for posterity and is available to hear and download at Archive.org.

J. Roddy Walston & The Business

Live at Lollapalooza

Organic, genuine and raw rock-and-roll music is in sparse supply these days, and the guys in J. Roddy Walston & The Business pack that old familiar sound high with soaring harmonies and ground-out riffs that are great on record. Although I haven’t seen them onstage myself, these songs sound like they were fit to boom out with tenfold emphasis in the live setting, without the restraints of knowing that a studio retake is an option.

Their bare bones, lightning capturin’ self-titled sophomore album has been on constant rotation recently and it’s been a long while since I’ve heard such anthemic rock and roll sound so sincere. Sincere rock anthems, now that’s a novelty …
