Event pick: Get a sneak peek of documentary on Houma Indians

If you’re heading down to Dulac Sunday for the Blessing of the Fleet (and who isn’t?) , go a little early to catch a screening of an early cut of Tom Buckholtz and Bill Bertrand’s forthcoming documentary about the Houma Indians. “The Water Indians” focuses on the tribe’s history and culture, and efforts to get federal recognition.  As one of the Houma Indians says in the film, “We were Indian enough to be discriminated enough, but not Indian enough for federal recognition.”

The Houma Indians also are struggling to preserve their traditions, such as the French language they historically have spoken.

The screening takes place at 11:30 a.m. Sunday April 3, at the Holy Family Catholic church on Grande Caillou Road in DuLac. The Blessing of the Fleet events take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; call 985-563-2325 for information.
