Concert recap: SimplePlay Presents …

SimplePlay Presents brought in the New Year with another great local showcase on Friday night at One Eyed Jack’s. Cardinal Sons, Prom Date and Mariine were the bands on hand, three quite different acts.

Vaughn Thomas Daigle and Ryan Andrieu Daigle are the duo that comprise Mariine. Their music could best be described as avant-garde and experimental and served well as the opening mood music for the evening.

Next up was Prom Date, a Lafayette/New Orleans-based synth-pop band. To say they were energetic would be a bold understatement. These guys and gal really enjoy playing music live and are gearing up for an East Coast tour. Their set ended with a unique acappella version of Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Two Headed Boy.”

The evening wrapped up with the Shirley clan putting on an indie pop music clinic. The set was amazing. Band members are no strangers to the One Eyed Jack’s stage, as they have played there no fewer than three times this last year. Being familiar with the venue set the stage for one epic encore. Speared on by stage monitor sound man Jonathan, the Sons came back to the stage to do a no-holds-barred Joe Cocker-inspired version of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” with the help of at least 20 other people including the opening bands as well as The Coyotes and Kid Carsons.
