Blog of the week: Live Music Blog: NOLA

I can remember the days when the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival music cubes were available only on paper. Nowadays, the official event site has interactive music schedules, Webcasts, smartphone apps. And there’s no shortage of bloggers and other Internet sites covering the event.

One of the best, to my mind, is Live Music Blog: NOLA, the brainchild of local Loyola Law School student and music writer Wesley Hodges and San Franciscan and Live Music Blog originator Justin Ward. The site launched in January 2011, and Hodges describes it online this way:

Live Music Blog NOLA is a 504-centric website featuring a blog, reviews, news of varying importance, periodic features (like the Artist of the Month), professional quality concert photography, interviews, and coverage of nationally touring acts swinging through the area. Although New Orleans is synonymous with funk and jazz, we ain’t even a little scared to jump outside of the proverbial box and hit the indie, rock, metal, bounce, hip-hop or street performer scene if duty calls and the music mood moves us.

Hodges hits the pavement nightly throughout the year to check out live music in the Big Easy, taking off only a few weeks each spring to cram for law exams (so far, it has worked). Live Music Blog: NOLA also has partnered with NolaVie (OK, I’m biased) to bring music reviews, profiles, concert picks and the like to our readers.

Like other music sites, LMBNola cranks it up at Jazz Fest time. The site not only covers the after-Fairgrounds scene, but also offers links to Fest live streaming at WWOZ and rollingstone.com (coming Saturday and Sunda), YouTube round-ups featuring participating artists, audience polls and lots more.

It’s a great place both for Jazz Fest fans who want to plan ahead and stay-at-home music bluffs looking to get a little armchair information. Check it out.
