AUDIO: ‘Library Runaway’

Bring Your Own is a nomadic storytelling series that takes place in living rooms, backyards and other intimate spaces within the community. Each month, seven storytellers have 7 minutes to respond to a theme. BYO airs on “All Things New Orleans” and is a biweekly podcast on WWNO.org.

On May 2 in New Orleans, as part of a Millage Proposition, locals voted on future funding for the city’s public library system. Back in February, the New Orleans library celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Turn The Page campaign, which has a goal to make New Orleans the most literate city in America by its 300th birthday in 2018. BYO — along with Irvin Mayfield, Leah Chase and 2-cent — participated in this celebration at the library’s main branch, designed to promote reading to an audience of elementary school students. Sophie Lucido Johnson told this story to the kid crowd at the event about her own love affair with libraries.

Bring Your Own is a production of Laine Kaplan-Levenson. The next BYO will take place on Thursday, June 18 in partnership with Life of the Law. The theme is “Eye Witness.”
