For the past few years in New Orleans, a worthy tradition has been taking hold at Tipitina’s Uptown, as the aptly-named Tryptophunk featuring the all-star sextet of George Porter Jr. (The Meters, 7 Walkers, funky Meters), John Gros (Papa Grows Funk), Mark Mullins (Bonerama), Craig Klein (Bonerama), Terrence Houston (Runnin’ Pardners, Toubab Krewe) and Brian Stoltz (funky Meters) converge for an annual pre-Turkey Day throwdown at the historic venue.

Anyone who makes the late-night rounds during Jazz Fest knows this plain and simple truth: Whenever George Porter Jr. decides to lead a super jam, it’s a no-brainer to make plans to be in the building. Improvisational magic should be in no short supply on Wednesday night, and when all you’ve got to do the day following is eat as much turkey and gravy as possible, there’s little excuse to miss this one. Expect a good helping of Meters tunes (2011’s show included a scorching “Ain’t No Use”), traditional New Orleans classics and perhaps a nod or two to Professor Longhair as this makeshift musical beast reconvenes on Wednesday night after an opening set by GRAVY.

Get Tryptophunk’d on Wednesday night before you get Tryptophan’d with the family on Thursday.
